A Cleveland Story @ J-Walk Blog →
The story is as old as Moses… Cleaveland. A tragic tale of a Midwesterner meeting misfortune as someone from the California speeds by and captures the moment for other coastal dwellers’ amusement. They didn’t even throw some healthcare out the window. Also, this is like 2 miles from my house. No, it’s not me.

Irregular Expressions
Another reason I haven’t put much up recently is I’ve had a few late nights over the last couple of weeks due to work. We’ve been toying with changes to a site for Search Engine Optimization. Our technology stack uses a derivative of the Apache Http Server and many of the changes we’re making employ the mod_rewrite module, known the world ‘round. In SEO we...

Food Notes
I’m woefully behind on some out-and-about I’ve been doing — it must be because of being out-and-about so much. Here’s a quick long recap: Hit Light before the Cavs game last Thursday, then watched at The Angle. I had the lamb burger from the happy hour bar menu at Light and noticed that they’re going for at least a gyro reference by serving with thinly sliced cukes on...

Gob Rowns!
Cleveland got a decent grade for their draft (B-). I think they’ve put themselves in the position to get a strong A, since they put people where they need them (whether they work out or not is really up in the air for everybody). Perhaps more importantly, It looks like last year’s dogs in the division didn’t do very well, and the Stillers got graded only marginally better....

Food and Sports Notes
There’s a bar in the O.C. called The Old Angle. When we first moved to the near west it was probably the go-to establishment, but as we’ve learned the area and more choices have moved in our attendance has sadly fallen off. It’s still a great place for above average pub fare and to watch a game, and that’s just what we’ve been doing. Since the Cavs are 2-0 we...

We also had the Mushroom Ravioli last week, ate it on our rooftop when the weather was great last Thursday. These are the people in my neighborhood… in my neighborhood… in my neigh-bor-hooo-oood.

Stone Mad has been being built out for so long that you can see their facade and unique lawn furniture in Google Satellite and Streetview although they just opened last week. The exciting news is that one of the chefs from the now-defunct and hugely-awesome Sage has produced the lunch menu.

Moon Bloodgood -- show murderer
The good news is that T:TSCC is renewed, it was surprisingly engaging, especially considering they brought in Brian Austin Green. The bad news is that this chick, with the plethora of “O”s in the name, was a main character on both Journeyman and Daybreak and both tanked. She’s very attractive, but doesn’t exactly ooze personality.  A Terminator film would be welcome, I...

Michael Symon to host Food Network’s 'Dinner:... →
So this is the news he was alluding to. Or… to which he was alluding. If you recall the last guy was a bit of a scam artist, and this is a show Bourdain always makes fun of (I guess to a chef or caterer, the challenges aren’t that impossible at all). But hey, we’ll take it. Congrats Chef! Update: The announcement in Symon’s words, plus news on a restaurant he’s...

Gone Baby Gone
Saw Gone Baby Gone (2007) over the weekend, and it was quite well-made. You can’t not enjoy the characters with their rumpled clothes and thick accents. The story had an interesting structure… seemingly over at the 1/2way point. Naturally if you’re wearing a watch you are thus clued into more twists to come. The odd pacing gives a great chance to really spend time with the...

Taphouse Brunch
Partook of the Tremont Taphouse brunch this Sunday AM. They have a fascinating brunch menu — instead of just breakfast they have a Hanger Steak and Blackened Scallops and such. It’s interesting to see someone making brunch Brunch, instead of Late Breakfast. As interesting as that is, it’s also interesting that our group of four all chose breakfast items. A brunch menu without a...

Onion World
Rich Hall had an excellent show in the late 80s on the Comedy Channel — Onion World. It’s exceedingly difficult to find info on it. He had great music on, though, and this is where I first heard of Trip Shakespeare, and thus had a lead on subsequent Dan Wilson and Semisonic fans. Check out those harmonies.

Neologism
Did you know that Sniglets weren’t really invented by Rich Hall? He certainly used them to full advantage. RIP Douglas Adams. Once in the teen years I nominated a sniglet out of a form in the back of the book — “Garbalanche”. We had a bag of trash slowly tip over and spill out, and coined the word. Unfortunately that isn’t a common occurrence, or I’m sure it...

One simple truth --
Pop loveliness is born of one simple truth. Multiple perspectives or in-depth analysis and even striaght-forward rumination is likely to ruin a pure, crystalized truth. Thus: Two Minutes and 42 Seconds is the perfect pop song lenght. (references - via)

This is what happens when you don't understand...
This story is hilarious — someone’s grandmother told them, or misunderstood herself, that it’s dangerous to let mayonnaise warm up (because mayo, back in the 50s, contained raw eggs that might contain salmonella). Everyone and their mom, at this point, has had some pasta salad swimming in the stuff that sat out all day at a picnic and still eaten it. Yet somehow a 1min...

O, it makes a difference
I was surprised to see one of my favorite products featured on dooce today and even more surprised to follow her links to see she was mocking it. Some people advise the use of water in place of inferior broth/stock. I don’t go that far, but this chicken broth is available at Costco (by the vat, of course) and is far and away the best packaged stuff I’ve ever tasted. I would tend to...

Red eye
This weekend’s Vegas fun was fueled by Mexican Coffee. Mexican Coffee, the whipped cream topped choice of degenerate gamblers everywhere! Anything happen of note? We managed to finish with an 8-hour marathon session at the Mirage, then got comped to their pretty nice sushi buffet. Wandered the posh Wynn Friday night, which has pretty fascinating decor. Placed in the money in a poker...

Cleveland on the air
XM Radio is having a tribute to Cleveland, which is cool but I have their competitor/soon-to-be partner Sirius. That’s OK, Sirius has Kid Leo on daily which is obviously a tribute itself. In college I did radio here in Cleveland on WRUW and the whole station had a (Moses) Cle(a)veland week during the bicentennial. Lots of the artists mentioned in the XM article were played, and since we had...

You got your web data in my spreadsheets!
I hackeded a fun hack this morning. I had a client who was seeing some weirdness in their website that we’re having trouble reproducing. In order to check the logs on the servers, we’d like to know their IP address and the time of the incident. Unfortunately this internet of ours is a bit duplicitous with IPs, and a user that doesn’t concern themselves with those intricacies is a...

This blogging thing is tough (with beer)
This isn’t going be as cool as the headline suggests. I’ve run across two topics this week that I thought were blog-worthy, both beer related, but some in-depth internet research (is that an oxymoron?) has left me with imprecise information and nothing but a mess. So I’ll write about those messes because as they say, “edification loves company”. First you may have...

Greatest American Gyro
I was perusing my Cook’s Illustrated 2007 Annual and found an interesting article on making everyone’s favorite rotating food at home. In Bringing Gyros Home (members only link, although a short term pass can let you peruse the recipe) the Cooks Illustrated folks make a few adjustments that produce a passable imitation without hitting up a carnival or greasy restaurant. The central...
