DIRECTV2PC →
Gave a trial run to the DirecTv application that lets you stream video from your DVR. My old HR10 didn’t fare too well. I was on my wireless, VPNed into my internal network and it didn’t even find the DVR. Then I plugged into my internal gigabit switch and it discovered it, let me browse the Now Playing list, and I kicked off a video. Unfortunately it was choppy — surprising over...

Potatoes in Portugal @ Blog Appetit →
“Somehow the potatoes there just have a bigger, fuller, potato flavor.” I second that emotion.

WatchWatch
This happened today in Cleveland, 40 blocks east of downtown. I thus could not take a shower 40 blocks west of downtown (for like 4 hours). Hurrumph.

Ad trends...
I noticed the other day that about 1/3 of all commercials seem to have the “rotating text” effect going on. I dug around and found where I first saw this — I think it’s a student project by Jarrat Moody. For documentation it looks like I came across this in Feb 2007 — so the gestation of web techniques to hit the mainstream is apparently about 20months.

Bee-boop
I have a Tivo DVR and a DirecTv HD DVR, and I think I might have figured out why Tivo has the distinctive “bee-boop” sound. Our other DVR will frequently let out a loud transient pop when you jump forward — the result of a discontinuity where the audio is spliced. Tivo probably first inserted their sound to cover this problem (instead of fancy programming and DSP to smooth the...

East Side Adventures
We made an rare trip to the east side last week and hit up a new Thai/Korean/Japanese restaurant on Coventry, Tree Country Bistro. I had a new dish to me, Odkul Bi Bao Bam (sp?), which is a simple rice dish served in a super-heated stone bowl. Very tasty with a deeply flavored Korean BBQ sauce and the way the rice crisped up as I ate was awesome. Their sushi lacked the polish of some shops but was...

Italian Pumpkin Soup @ Dine O Mite! →
This is really close to the Butternut Squash soup I made for Thanksgiving. I did the prep as described (which surprises me, since I just interpreted a few different recipes), but didn’t add anything Amaretto. It was a bit strong on the pepper giving it a spiciness that accumulated, and I mixed some lime juice with yogurt for a high-note sauce to drizzle over it. Also mine was a bit thick on...

Reputation, not Quality
Two articles made me think of the futility of protesting ones reputation. American car companies face the same problem as Cleveland — too many people aren’t willing to let go of a what at one point was a simple truth. For the car-makers, there was a good decade and a half in which their cars were clearly inferior to foreign options. While in Cleveland the river caught fire and the city...
